Everything You Need to Know About DIY Pink Hair

Before we help you find the best pink hair dye, we want to answer some basic questions first. We also want to remind you that we are not trained professionals.

We do have firsthand experience coloring our hair at home, but we are not licensed professionals either.

If you are concerned about any step of the process, you should consider going to a salon. We aren’t trying to convince you to dye your own hair. We’re only here to give you the best tools for the job if you’re already determined to do it.

Keep in mind that some hair types are easier to work with than others, and the lightening process is brutal.

Natural hair, for instance, tends to be dry and very dark. Therefore, it can get damaged easily but will need extensive bleaching to get the desired level of lightness. You also run the risk of wrecking your natural curl pattern, which can be devastating.

It’s easy to cause breakage with very fine hair too. You need to make sure you check it frequently and use the right developer to avoid over-processing.

All of this is food for thought before you dive in headfirst!

Can you use pink hair dye without bleaching first?

Unless you have incredibly light hair naturally, you will have to lighten your hair first. Some products are supposed to work on dark hair, but they only deposit color. In turn, they will only tint your natural hair and could end up being fairly dark.

If you want a pastel pink or a particular shade, you will absolutely need to lighten your hair first. The lighter your hair is, the better your chance is of getting your favorite shade of pink.

What kind of dyes are available?

Semi-permanent pink hair dyes are the most common. They wash out over time but make your hair feel incredible because they are conditioning. The vegan dyes won’t damage your hair; they only deposit color.

There are also semi-permanent and permanent pink hair dye brands that require a developer. They are harsher than the vegan options and may lighten your hair slightly. They are meant to last longer, but they will still fade eventually like the rest.

Whether these hair dyes are right for you comes down to the health of your hair. You will still need to lighten your hair before using them.

If your hair still feels extremely healthy, you can absolutely consider permanent pink hair dye. However, if your hair is dry, vegan hair dyes are a much gentler choice.

How long does pink hair last?

It is hard to pin down exactly how long pink hair dye will last because it depends on a few factors. That includes the formula, the shade, and how often you wash your hair.

For example, if you choose a dark pink, it will take longer for the color to wash out. It will lighten first and slowly fade to a pastel. If you start out with pastel pink, it will fade much more quickly.

Typically, bright pinks could last anywhere from one to three months, depending on how often you wash your hair. Pastels will likely last about two to four weeks but can last longer with maintenance.

How do you care for pink hair?

If you want your pink hair to last, you can use a color depositing conditioner and cold water. It will replace the pigment that is washing out during your showers. It makes it much easier to maintain your hair color for a longer period of time.

Color depositing conditioners are very affordable. You won’t have to dye your hair frequently, so using these conditioners will save you money.

You should also avoid clarifying shampoos that are meant to strip buildup out of your hair. This will also strip pigment out of your hair.

The bleaching process

Before you get started, make sure you have everything you need. Make sure to wear gloves to avoid damaging the skin on your hands.

Also, the dirtier your hair is, the better. You do not want to bleach freshly washed hair.

Directions

  1. Brush out tangles and section your hair with your clips.
  2. Apply vaseline to your skin where the bleach may come in contact with your skin by accident.
  3. Set up all your supplies before you get started, make sure your foils and bowl of bleach will be within reach.
  4. Follow the directions on the container to mix the bleach and developer. Prepare more than you think you will need. We recommend using 30 volume developer or 20 volume for previously lightened hair.
  5. Once you’re prepared, start applying the bleach in small sections. Apply about an inch away from your scalp, avoiding your roots. Really cake on the product to prevent patchiness and cover each section in foil.
  6. Allow the bleach to sit on your hair for at least 20 minutes before applying bleach to your roots. Once you have applied the bleach to your roots, let it develop for 10 to 25 more minutes. Do your best not to get it on your scalp.
  7. Do not leave the bleach on your hair for more than 45 minutes.
  8. Once your time is up, you can rinse out the bleach and wash your hair twice. Tip your head back or flip your head over to avoid getting any bleach in your eyes.
  9. Do not use a conditioner if you are planning to tone your hair.
  10. Dry your hair and take a look at the level of lightness. This is important because it will look darker when it is wet.
  11. Tone your hair if it is light enough.
  12. If not, you should want at least a week before bleaching again to give your hair time to recoup. Never bleach your hair twice on the same day.
  13. Tone when you are absolutely done bleaching your hair.

Manic Panic is a well-known brand that has a ton of different colors. It is a fantastic vegan formula and is extremely conditioning.

They have several different shades for you to choose from, but their Cotton Candy Pink is extremely popular. However, their Creamtone line has a lovely pastel option, and the Classic High Voltage Fuchsia Shock is gorgeous.

Arctic Fox is an old friend, for a good reason. It is one of the loveliest vegan hair dyes out there. They have so many different shades to choose from in general, but three gorgeous shades of pink.

You can choose to go bold and bright with Virgin Pink, lighten things up with Electric Paradise, or go pastel with Frose. You can also make any color more pastel by mixing it with their Arctic Mist diluter.

Punky Hair Color

Punky Hair Color is another popular brand that is bringing all the best pink hair color options. If you want a vibrant pink, you can use their Flamingo Pink hair dye. It’s bold, bright, and just asking for attention.

If you prefer a more subtle look, you can also find the Punky Cotton Candy pink. It’s a gorgeous pastel pink hair dye, but you should keep in mind that it is so light it won’t last long. Plus, you will need to use it on extremely light hair to get the payoff you’re looking for.

This is another conditioning formula, so it will make bleached hair feel amazing.

N’ Rage

N Rage Demi Permanente Hair Color, Feisty Fuchsia
Buy on Amazon

N’ Rage is another fantastic brand. They don’t have a wide range of colors; they actually only have four. However, the colors they do have are vibrant and extremely long-lasting.

The only issue with using their Fiesty Fuschia hair color is the fact that it’s darker than most pinks. So if you’re interested in getting a pretty pastel, you aren’t going to have any luck here.

When we used this color, we cut the product down dramatically with a conditioner and made it gorgeous neon pink. However, if you don’t dilute the product at all, it’s more magenta than hot pink for a few washes.

That’s no problem if that’s the color you want. It’s a bold and beautiful color and will last a long time. But it is something to keep in mind in case you want a more subtle pink.

Ion Permanent Brights Creme Hair Color

Ion Hottie Pink Semi Permanent Hair Color Hottie Pink

If you have healthy hair, you could use the Ion Permanent Brights. This pink hair color has a range of colors, from a rosy pink to a deep magenta. This is one of the best options for a super-light pastel pink hair dye if you have achieved a high level of blonde.

Before you use this, you should know that it is harsher than the other options on this list. It needs to be mixed with equal parts of the developer, which could further damage your hair.

If your hair is already very dry and brittle from the bleaching process, this could make it feel worse. It is not conditioning like the vegan hair dyes mentioned above.
